Nantes wholesale market will move from Ile de Nantes, an island in the centre of Nantes, to the south of the city, according to a report from Vegetable.
The decision finally gained the unanimous approval of the community board in June and will see the wholesale market's 100 or so companies move to the south of the city in 2018.
The future location will be close to an existing commercial centre and road networks, taking into acount the companies' issues regarding accessibility.
The 16ha construction will reportedly require an initial investment of €70m.
The main Nantes-based salad companies, such as co-operative Océane and Etablissements Marais, have already left the wholesale market to set up in the south of Nantes.
However, the wholesale market remains an important source of fresh produce, especially of organic fruit and vegetables, supplying the city of Nantes, as well as further afield in the Vendée and southern Brittany.
