A number of leading fresh produce businesses and associations have welcomed the official award of Spanish Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status to Murcian melon group Melón de Torre Pacheco after some three years’ work.
Fermín Sánchez, managing director of Hortiberia, said the receipt of the PGI mark would enable Murcia’s melon sector to “increase the added value of the product, whose quality is well known in countries such as the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France”.
Alfonso Gálvez Caravaca, general secretary of fresh produce association Asaja Murcia, said the PGI award would allow Murcian melon growers to “increase the awareness and sales of the product' further than Spain's borders.
The appointment of Procomel president Juan Peñalver as president of PGI Melón de Torre Pacheco was also welcomed by the two organisations.
