Spanish imports of Moroccan peppers during the 2023/24 season reached an all time high, according to Morocco World News, with data from Hortoinfo, based on Estacom (Icex-Tax Agency) statistics, showing that Morocco supplied 93,780 tonnes of peppers to Spain, valued at around US$125.6mn,
Moroccan pepper exports have risen by 193 per cent over the past decade to meet growing demand and now account for over 91 per cent of Spain’s bell pepper imports.
Moroccan peppers were sold in Spain at an average of US$1.35 per kilogram, below the overall average of US$1.39 per kg for imported peppers, and significantly cheaper than those from Portugal (US$2.00 per kg) and Belgium (US$2.24 per kg).
According to report released last month by the Spanish Federation of Associations and Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants (Fepex), Moroccan exports to Spain from January to July 2024 rose 10 per cent year-on-year to US$755mn, representing 24 per cent of Spain’s fresh fruit and vegetable imports.
