MSC Savona at Antwerp

For the third time in the past few months, a Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) container vessel has set a new record for draught at the Port of Antwerp, with the MSC Savona entering the port with a draught of no less than 15.50m.

During a two-day stay in Antwerp, some 7,375 TEU were unloaded and 3,761 TEU loaded, breaking a further record for the most containers handled on one single ship at the MSC home terminal.

'Once again the Port of Antwerp has demonstrated its huge cargo-generating capacity,' said port alderman Marc Van Peel.

The presence of such vessels has been made possible by the deepening of the Scheldt estuary, which was successfully completed at the end of 2010.
