Production and exports are expected to grow by 3 per cent and 5 per cent respectively this year
Mexico is forecast to produce 2.75mn tonnes of avocados in 2025, 3 per cent more than the 2.67mn-tonne total for 2024. The increase is attributed to favourable growing conditions, improved agricultural practices, and strong export demand.
Avocado exports are forecast at 1.34mn tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 5 per cent. The US remains the main export destination, receiving 80 per cent of shipments, followed by Canada (7 per cent) and Japan (3 per cent).
Domestic consumption is also increasing. In 2024, Mexico’s per capita consumption grew by almost 10 per cent, reaching nearly 12 kg, putting it among the top ten avocado consuming countries worldwide.
Planted area is expected to remain largely unchanged at 256,000ha this year. New plantings are limited due to increased land-use regulations and a deforestation-free certification program in Michoacán.
Michoacán leads production with 68 per cent of national output, followed by Jalisco (12 per cent) and the State of Mexico (5 per cent). In 2024, Michoacán’s production decreased by 1 per cent due to climate and regulatory enforcement, while Jalisco’s increased by 5 per cent due to increased export demand.
