Beneficial rains augur well for volumes and sizes in 2024/25
As the Malaga avocado harvest gets under way, leading Spanish supplier Montosa said it anticipates a favourable campaign, with volumes and sizes up on last season thanks to improved water availability.
While last season was marred by the persistent drought, the Malaga-based company is much more optimistic about the current harvest.
“The quality of our fruit is always exceptional, but the available water directly conditions the number of kilograms harvested as well as the calibres,” said field technician Alberto Plaza. “This year, the spring rains helped fruit set. Then, the recent storms, which have been so devastating for other crops, in our case are being very beneficial to make the fruit grow.”
Europe receives more than half of Montosa’s avocado volume, with France and the UK being the biggest markets. Large national and European supermarket chains are the main buyers. “Our customers value very positively our high level of product knowledge, both in the field and in ripening, as well as the continuous supply all year round and the professionalism of the service we offer them,” Plaza said.
“The Malaga avocado season is always highly anticipated all over Europe for the fruit’s quality, flavour and refinement. It is a fresh and local product, which reaches the consumer within days of harvesting, and always at its optimum level of ripeness.”
Montosa said harvesting is expected to run through to the beginning of May. Hass accounts for the almost all its avocado offer.
