French retailer Monoprix has announced its intention to close two stores, in Rouen and Angoulême, which have been deemed not profitable enough by the group's new director, Stéphane Maquaire.

The two stores are relatively new, at one and three years old respectively, according to Challenges.fr.

The store in Angoulême has reportedly suffered from aggressive competition from a nearby Carrefour Market, the company said, while the second has seen too little traffic.

Monoprix's aim is to renovate its oldest stores, in part by giving a face-lift to its fruit and vegetable displays, while opening new stores in priority towns such as Lyon and Marseille.
