Port of Los Angeles

The Port of Los Angeles has recorded a 7.8 per cent decline in imports during February but a 9.5 per cent increase in export cargo volume.

According to a press release from the facility, imports contracted to 254,359 TEUs compared with 275,886 TEUs during the same period last year.

The port attributed the downturn in part to plant shutdowns in China for the Chinese New Year.

Conversely, exports rose to 164,725 TEUs compared with 150,357 TEUs last February.

The result marks the 21st consecutive month of export growth at the Port of Los Angeles, according to the facility.

Combined, total loaded imports and exports for February declined by 1.7 per cent, falling from 426,243 TEUs last February to 419,084 TEUs last month.

Factoring in empties, which declined 17 per cent year over year, the port said that overall February 2012 volume (525,653 TEUs) dropped 5.3 per cent against February 2011 (554,912 TEUs).
