Mexico exported a record 1.272m tonnes of avocados between July 2019 and June 2020, an increase of 11 per cent on the previous year. The value of shipments rose by 22 per cent.

According to El Economista, the figures confirm the double-digit growth trend seen over the previous two seasons. Exports grew by 18.4 per cent in 2018 and 10.7 per cent in 2019.

Forecasts from the Department of Agriculture, sales could continue to grow in the 2020/21 cycle.

Around 964,000 tonnes were sent to the US in 2019/20, valued at more than US$ 2.4bn, a new record in both volume and value.
Michoacán, the only state that can enter the US market, saw a 7 per cent increase in production over the previous year and is set to see a further rise in export volumes for 2020/21.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, “avocado demand in the US remained strong despite Covid-19 pandemic challenges to agricultural crops and supply chains and is projected to increase”.
