German retailer Metro has looked to reinforce its commitment to CSR by stepping up its food bank partnership, agreeing a three-year sponsorship deal with the European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA) which represents over 250 national and local food banks in 21 countries across Europe.

According to Metro, the sponsorship is running from 2013 to 2015, with a contribution of €30,000 to be made each year to the Brussels-based Food Bank association.

In its home market of Germany, Metro has been the main financial sponsor of the German federal Food Bank association Bundesverband Deutsche Tafel e.V. since 2006, while its wholesale Cash & Carry markets and Real hypermarkets regularly donate food items to hundreds of local and regional Tafel Food Bank organisations.

'The Group's social commitment in this regard indeed goes beyond Germany to reach another 14 European countries,' Metro said in a statement. 'Metro Cash & Carry's local operations in these countries including France, Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Portugal carry out food donations to the food bank associations at national and local levels. A large number of these beneficiary food banks are already covered by the FEBA network.

'Metro Group believes it is fitting to consolidate the engagement with the European Food Bank initiative with the latest move as the company is truly dedicated to such programmes across Europe with long-term donations and charitable activities, which are an integral part of the Group's value of being a responsible corporate citizen around the world.'

Founded in 1986, the European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA) brings together 253 food banks in Europe, which fight daily against hunger and food waste.
