Work has started on Spanish supermarket Mercadona’s new distribution centre in Vitoria. The first phase of the centre involves the construction of a €50m logistics block in Jundiz which will house some 150 small companies supplying the retailer’s stores in northern Spain and is due to be completed at the end of 2017.
The centre will include a fully automated warehouse with different temperature zones for baked, frozen and fresh products, as well as an area for manual packing and mixed loads.
The new facility brings Mercadona’s total distribution capacity to 847,000m2 and is part of the retailer’s strategy to streamline its logistics network, using “fewer resources and having as little impact as possible on the environment”, the retailer said.
