A multi-million euro modernisation plan has been agreed for Mercabarna’s fruit and vegetable market. Under the terms of a deal signed at the end of last month, the companies operating out of the market will assume the total cost of the project, in exchange for receiving a 17-year extension to their lease.
The €20m scheme will include reinforcing the market’s roof and repairing its façade, as well as installing a new water system. Work is due to get underway at the end of this year and be finalised by 2020.
The market authorities said the first step was to set up a works commission to oversee the project, comprising of representatives from Mercabarna and fruit and vegetable wholesaler association Agem. They have given assurances the building work will not interfere with the day-to-day running of the market.
