In France, fast food chain McDonald's will this week add a new fruit product to its menu, according to Fld: the Little Watermelon.
The packaged 80g product will be served on a wooden stick in the same way as the chain's kiwifruit offering, and will cost €1.40.
It will reportedly be available for two months, with close to 1.6m units expected to be sold, or the equivalent of 130 tonnes of Spanish watermelon.
The product will be supplied by Dutch company Fruity Line, which is specialised in the creation of fruit salads, juices and smoothies.
The fast food chain has therefore decided to take last year's melon product, which was supplied by Soldive and Crudi, off the menu this year.
However, the company stated that it wanted to diversify its offering of fruit without necessarily abandoning the products of previous years.
In September, McDonald's France will celebrate two years of its fresh fruit consumption promotional plan, dubbed 'Wednesday's are for crunching'.
The promotion takes place each Wednesday, offering a complimentary fruit bag for each children's meal purchased.
Every year, 1,600 tonnes of fresh fruit are consumed in McDonald's restaurants throughout France, including pineapple, kiwifruit, melon and now watermelon.
