Spanish citrus specialist Martinavarro has today (14 November) opened a new packhouse in Cartaya, Andalusia, in a site formely operated by regional citrus packer and processor Citroluz.
According to press reports, the Valencia-based company will use the site to “improve the freshness and quality” of the oranges and clementines that it supplies to Spanish retailer Mercadona’s outlets in southern Spain.
Martinavarro completed its purchase of the facilities of defunct fresh fruit packer and juice processor in July, almost two years after Citroluz ceased operations.
The reactivation of Citroluz’s packhouse and processing facility is expected to generate up to 300 new jobs, while Martinavarro will be able to make use of a site that has a capacity to handle 30,000 tonnes of citrus each year.
Martinavarro currently produces around 45,000 tonnes of citrus each year in Andalusia at sites in Cartaya and nearby Almonte.
