The latest figures covering UK retail market share for the second quarter of 2010 have revealed that industry leader Tesco and Walmart-owned Asda experienced slight declines during the three-month period, while Morrisons and Sainsbury's saw their respective shares climb.

Data from market analyst Kantar Worldpanel showed that Sainsbury's increased market share to 16.1 per cent, with Morrisons up to 11.6 per cent.

Tesco still leads the way with a market share of 30.8 per cent, down 0.2 percentage points year-on-year, with Asda in second spot despite a drop of 0.3 points through the quarter.

'Morrisons in particular has shown a strong performance this month,' said Kantar Communications director Ed Garner. 'Despite some commentators expecting the Morrisons growth to run out of steam it still comfortably leads the top four in terms of year-on-year performance with growth of 6.9 per cent.'

According to Kantar's figures, discounters as a whole are struggling to increase their market share, remaining at around 6 per cent for the last two years.

The Cooperative Group benefited from the accelerated assimilation of Somerfield through the quarter, Kantar noted, with market share jumping to 6.4 per cent from 5.5 per cent.
