UK-based Marco has put to use a wide range of its packaging equipment at the Co-operative Group's newly commissioned strawberry packing plant in Longforgan, near Dundee in Scotland.

According to the packhouse profitability expert, the scope of its supply at the £2m (€2.2m) facility includes its Trac-IT data management system, Linemaster checkweighers, in-feed and out-feed conveyor systems, high-speed twin top labelling machines and end-of-line packaging equipment.

The new plant has been specifically built to pack local 'Grown by Us' strawberries from the Co-operative group's own farm. The Co-operative Farms, part of the Co-operative Group, is the UK's largest farmer supplying its food stores with 'Grown by Us' produce.

Rob Hull, head of vegetable operations at The Co-operative Farms, said that the group had recognised the efficiency of the punnet packing process would be vital to operations, and noted that he had been delighted with the performance of the Marco system.

'The Longforgan plant is a welcome addition to our extensive operations in Scotland,' said Mr Hull. 'This investment will help us to ensure we can get fresh strawberries, grown on our own farm, into our shops and on to our customers as efficiently as possible.'
