Last week, UK retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) opened its flagship superstore in Cheshire Oaks, northwest England, a store exploring the company's desire to blend traditional and online shopping.

At the new outlet, customers are invited to find products using the touchscreens on'browse and order' hubs, according to a report in the Guardian.

'The high street is not going to stand still so we know that we can't,' M&S's Laura Wade-Gery told the newspaper. 'How do we use the internet to reinvent the store? It's as big a mission as that.'

According to M&S, consumers who use the company's website as well as shopping instore spend four times as much, while smartphone users spend eight times as much.

'We have to provide more ways for consumers to access M&S,' Wade-Gery commented.

The new store is sizeable, measuring some 151,000 sq ft and located in a catchment area of an estimated 1.3m people, and is also reportedly the greenest, most sustainable store the retailer has so far built.
