This year’s Spanish mango campaign, which is due to run between September and November, is likely to equal last season’s production of 100,000 tonnes in the key growing region of Malaga.
Local fresh produce association Asaja Malaga told news agency EFE that the season’s turnover was also expected to reach €11m, with the Osteen variety forecast to account for 80 per cent of overall production.
Asaja Malaga’s Benjamín Faulí said the region’s mango sector was aiming to promote the fruit in Spain and the rest of Europe as a high-quality product, explaining that he believes it is necessary to promote Spanish mangoes as a “luxury product – not just another fruit from the pile”.
The association added that it was recommending that its growers only harvest the fruit at the optimum point of maturation and avoid picking them while still green to avoid the risk of thefts that usually accompany the start of the campaign.
