avocados

According to Spanish fresh produce association Asaja-Málaga, this season’s avocado crop in the Andalucian province of Axarquía is likely to reach more than 50,000 tonnes, some 11 per cent greater than the previous campaign.

Benjamín Faulí from the group told Málaga’s Diario Sur that as a consequence of the recent rains this campaign’s harvest would be particularly good, with improved sizing.

“We’ve had several years of low sizes, so this rain has been very welcome,” he said. “The rains have also helped the development of the trees.”

Avocado production in Axarquía during the previous campaign reached 45,000 tonnes, of which some 80 per cent were of the Hass variety, while the remainder were accounted for by various green skinned varieties.

According to Mr Faulí, more than 8,000ha of avocados are currently cultivated in Axarquía, with some 70 per cent of production exported to countries within the European Union.
