Morocco and Peru led the way in 2024, with 66 per cent of Spain’s fresh produce imports coming from countries outside the EU
Around 66 per cent of Spain’s fresh fruit and vegetable imports came from third countries during the January-October period of 2024.
According to data from the Customs and Excise Department, processed by Fepex, the value of imports from non-EU countries during the period was just under €2.7bn, up 12 per cent year-on-year.
Fresh produce coming from the EU made up 34 per cent of imports, at a value of €1.39bn, climbing 13 per cent on the same period of 2023.
Morocco was Spain’s leading supplier in January-October 2024 with €801mn, which represented growth of 13 per cent.
It was followed by Peru, with €501mn (up 22 per cent), while France occupied third place with €426mn (up 22 per cent).
Portugal was the fourth-largest supplier of fruit and vegetables with a value of €350mn and year-on-year growth of 19 per cent, while the Netherlands is fifth, its supply dropping 3 per cent to €205mn.
In volume terms, Spanish imports of fruit and vegetables from non-EU countries totalled 1.8mn tonnes, while those from the EU rose to 1.7mn tonnes.
Total imports of 3.5mn tonnes for January-October 2024 represented a rise of 7 per cent on the same period of 2023.
