Maersk Line

Denmark’s Maersk container line is launching a brand new reefer express service connecting Peru and Ecuador with the US East Coast.

Maersk is introducing the new weekly service in response to increased demand for fresh perishable products into the US, Thomas Eskesen, global head of Maersk’s refrigerated business, told Newsline.

Bill Duggan, responsible for Maersk’s US and Canada reefer business, says the first sailing from Paita northbound will leave on February 5, 2011.

“This will be a year-round service and focus on the banana trade and other fresh cargo, seasonal and annual,” said Mr Duggan.

Operated by four 1700 teu ships, Maersk’s new express South America to US service will reach Miami, US, from Paita (northwest Peru) in 10 days; Paita to Newark in 13 days; and Paita to Philadelphia in 15 days.

Transit times from Guayaquil, Ecuador, are: Miami, six days; Newark nine days; and Philadelphia 11 days.

From Balbao, Panama, the service takes four days to Miami, seven days to Newark and nine days to Philadelphia.

“This will be an excellent service for the fresh perishable cargo to Miami and the North East US,” said Mr Duggan. “For the Newark area we will have the best-in-class transit times, and for Philadelphia a competitive product. Miami arrivals are also very fast and we are very competitive.'
