Dubai-based port operator DP World has revealed that its new development at London Gateway should open in the fourth quarter of 2013, IFW has reported.

The port and logistics centre will have an initial capacity of 1.6m TEU, according to the company, and will allow UK business to take advantage of 'a more cost-effective, greener way of getting the nation's goods to consumers'.

DP World announced further that the development would create an extra 1,000 new jobs in the coming months, with that figure eventually rising to 36,000 in the future.

Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem commented: 'We are delighted to announce an opening date for the new port. London Gateway will help UK businesses improve efficiency and competitiveness and it will provide the UK with a premier, world-class global trading centre.'

UK business secretary Vince Cable added: 'It will help Britain to maintain its competitiveness, drive productivity and, crucially, strengthen our links with Asia and beyond.'
