Production grew 55 per cent to 63,000 tonnes in 2023/24
Murcian cooperative Limonar de Santomera saw its turnover surge to €58mn for the 2023/24 campaign. The company produced 63,000 tonnes of citrus last season (an increase of 55 per cent on the previous campaign), of which 23,000 tonnes was organic.
Limonar de Santomera exports to more than 20 countries, including most European markets and other markets around the world. The company posted a 142 per cent increase in sales to Germany, while exports to France, the Netherlands and Spain grew by 24 per cent, 70 per cent and 37 per cent respectively.
This year, the company increased its acreage by 25 per cent to 1,300ha – 430ha of which is organic – and doubled its workforce to 600 employees.
General manager Antonio José Moreno commented: “Citrus is useful for preventing cardiovascular diseases and improving circulatory function, as well as providing vitamins, eliminating toxins and is a powerful bactericide, and the World Health Organisation recommends that it should be consumed regularly”.
The company said it is committed to environmental, social and economic sustainability, focused on conscious and responsible consumption and to a production using controlled processes and centralisation.
At last week’s Fruit Attraction, it showcased its latest campaign, ‘Better with lemon. Mejor de Santomera’ (Better with lemon. Better from Santomera), with which it is seeking to promote the origin of its lemons.
Limonar de Santomera exports to more than 20 countries, including most of Europe and other countries around the world. They produce high quality citrus fruit subject to rigorous phytosanitary controls.
