Last week, 200 lettuce producers from the south of France took a stand against supermarket power, refusing to sell their produce to buyers who were offering just €0.15 per lettuce, according to a report on Rtl.fr.
The producers reportedly demanded a price of €0.30 in order to enable them to cover their costs.
Rémy Roux, president of producer association Belles Salades de Provence, said that it was vital for the government to act if it wanted to avoid the disappearance of salad production in France.
Producers are particularly enraged by the low prices since such lettuces are generally sold for around €1 each at the supermarket.
