Les Domaines Agricoles has sent its first container of Moroccan Nadorcott mandarins to Japan after Morocco’s successful entry into the Japanese market earlier this year.

Moroccan citrus to Japan

Japan is the fifth-largest citrus importer in Asia, with imports valued at over US$270.5mn in 2023, according to Trade Map data.

Announcing the milestone, Les Domaines’ CEO Badr Bennis said it marked a significant step in expanding the global reach of Moroccan agricultural excellence and delivering the best Moroccan produce to international markets.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all the teams at Les Domaines Agricoles for their dedication and hard work in making this first shipment to Japan a reality. Their commitment and expertise are at the heart of our success,” he said.

“At Les Domaines Agricoles, our mission is clear: to offer the world the best of Moroccan agriculture. This milestone is yet another testament to our vision of bringing high-quality, sustainable, and innovative agricultural products to consumers worldwide. We look forward to further strengthening trade ties and bringing Moroccan Nadorcott mandarins to even more consumers across the globe.”

Morocco is aiming to increase its presence in the Japanese citrus market as part of its strategy to expand exports beyond traditional destinations.

A Moroccan trade delegation is scheduled to visit Tokyo from 14-19 April. It will include over 100 representatives from Morocco’s and Japan’s public and private sectors, encompassing exporters, government officials, and Japanese importers.

In tandem with this trade mission, a new marketing campaign will promote Moroccan citrus, aiming to facilitate the entry of fresh Moroccan products into Japanese and broader Asian markets.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan imported around US$400mn of goods from Morocco in 2022, primarily seafood and phosphates, while Japanese exports to Morocco were around US$206mn, including automobiles and machinery.

Japan has extended loans worth approximately US$2.2bn, grants of US$250mn, and technical assistance valued at US$270mn to Morocco as of November 2022, focusing on infrastructure, agriculture, aquaculture, education, and public health to mitigate socio-economic disparities.
