Dutch logistics service provider LBP Rotterdam has announced it plans to expand its main warehousing and coldstorage facility in the southern province of Maasdijk, enabling the company to handle an additional 1,500 pallets and to update its cooling units and packing equipment.
The volume of fruit and vegetables passing through the specialised fresh produce facility, which first began operating in 2006, has shown strong growth over the past four years, according to founder and director Hans Janssen.
'In October 2006, when the doors of LBP Rotterdam's new establishment opened, nobody had the faintest idea that, four years later, the enormous space could be too small for all our activities,' he commented.
Mr Janssen said the group had continuously sought to develop new possibilities and techniques, for example offering a real-time website system where customers can follow the entire logistical process, all the way from receiving initial confirmation from the shipper to the last pallet being delivered.
LBP Rotterdam's expansion will make use of vacant land behind the existing facility, land purchased at the same time as the original plot.
As well as offering extra pallet capacity on the first floor of a newly-built extension, a modern, well-equipped packing department is also set to be established above new coldstorage units.
'This department will be where in future our repacking activities, labelling and so on, as well asnetting and bagging at a later stage, can grow further,' Mr Janssen added.
Work on LBP Rotterdam's new extension is due to be completed by the end of December 2010, he added.
'LBP Rotterdam will be ready and we will be in a position to serve our existing and new customers in a well-considered manner.'
