Cargo volumes for December at the Port of Los Angeles increased by 11.09 per cent over the year-earlier period. The port said the rise was due in part to shippers moving cargo in advance of the Chinese New Year, which falls on 31 January this year.
Imports increased by 8.63 per cent from 296,874 TEUs in December 2012 to 322,500 TEUs the following year, while exports jumped 16.85 per cent from 147,417 TEUs to 172,261 TEUs in December 2013.
Combined, total loaded imports and exports for December climbed 11.36 per cent from 444,291 TEUs in December 2012 to 494,761 TEUs in December last year. However, volumes for the whole of 2013 were down 2.59 per cent at 7,868,582 TEUs the port said.
