Peruvian grower-exporter La Calera will supply Hass avocados to the US market this year through its Miami-based distribution partner Andean Sun Produce.
The fruit will be marketed under a new label called Gold Cup thanks to the opening up of the US market to non-cold treated Hass avocados from Peru at the end of last season.
“La Calera will be very prudent with this new market so we’ll only export about 1,000 tonnes this year, as we are just testing the waters,” the company’s Estuardo Masias told Fruitnet.
Depending the response of the market to its fruit, Masias said La Calera could increase its volume to 3,000 tonnes or 4,000 tonnes in the near future.
Currently the group has 240ha of avocados under production in Chincha, Peru.
