Kloosterboer Velsen, the expanded and adapted coldstore facility, has become the first in Europe to be awarded 'outstanding' Breeam certification.
According to the group, the 15,000m2 expansion in the Netherlands is around 10 per cent more energy efficient than comparable projects.
The expansion made use of the most innovative technologies available, Kloosterboer noted, with 2,500 solar panels installed on the aluminium roofs for the highest possible efficiency making the expansion energy-neutral.
According to Kloosterboer’s CEO, Jaco Hooij, the group has the ambition to be recognised for its sustainable approach.
In addition to the Velsen site, the Kloosterboer Cool Port location has also taken the necessary measures to achieve 'outstanding' certification.
The company had already previously achieved the 3-star 'very good' certificate for its expansion at the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam and four wind turbines have been placed at the site in Vlissingen.
