Bay Plenty kiwifruit orchards

The sale of a 48ha orchard planted with new Zespri's kiwifruit varieties G3 and G14 in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty has reportedly been hailed as a sign that confidence is returning to the sector following the devastating impact of its recent Psa crisis.

Paul Jones, a director of DMS Progrowers, which has acquired the land, told SunLive the Paengaroa orchard attracted investors in less than a week.

'It was easy to find people keen to be part of the purchase, despite the impacts of the disease Psa-V,' Jones told the website.'In fact we had to turn some away and reduce the level of investment by others. All who are part of the small group are experienced in the kiwifruit industry and well aware of the challenges of Psa.'

DMS said it would adopt best-practice systems laid out by Kiwifruit Vine Health, the organisation set up to tackle the bacterial vine disease Psa, and monitor plants for signs of infection.

'We are delighted to have been given the chance to buy such a high quality, large scale property,' Jones added.'This represents a unique opportunity to explore the potential of the new Zespri varieties at an entry price that we believe represents exceptional value.'
