Clive Chandler with one of his prize-winning Jazz apples

Jazz apples overtook Rubens at this year's National Fruit Show in the UK, with the variety taking home the top prize in an annual to identify the country's tastiest apple.

Canterbury-based producer Chandler & Dunn, one of 20 British Jazz growers, won the award for its Jazz production while the two runners up - FJ Adams & Son, and AR Neaves & Son - both entered the competition with Rubens apples.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury's topfruit technologist Theresa Huxley received a special award during the winners' ceremony.

Huxley, who has worked with Sainsbury's for several decades, was singled out for her dedication to the fresh produce industry with The Worshipful Company of Fruiterers' Fruit Culture Award.

Upon receiving the prize, Huxley commented: "I'm overwhelmed. My role would not work without all the great growers and producers I've worked with over the years."

Other highlights included victories for Liverpool-based grower Andy Roe of Flavourfresh Salads, who took home The David Stapley Trophy for tastiest tomato, and Kent fruit grower Clive Goatham, of AC Goatham & Son, who won the Norman Collett Prize for Rubens apples.

Goatham was recently awarded with the Institute of Horticulture's Achievement in Horticulture Award, a nomination made by Sainsbury's Huxley, who said at the time: "I am delighted that one of my largest apple and pear grower-packers has been recognised for his hard work."
