A survey conducted by Italian newspaper Libero has revealed that Italian consumers have responded to the economic downturn by filling their shopping trolleys with more fresh produce at the expense of pre-prepared and frozen products.

According to the report, average sales of frozen ready meals through the country's major food retailers were down 18 per cent year-on-year during 2009.

The volume of seasonal fresh fruit sold, meanwhile, was up 8 per cent compared with the previous year, with a 4 per cent rise in seasonal vegetables.

Sales of leguminous vegetables, however, fell 13 per cent, with exotic fruit sales also struggling, the survey revealed.
