Israeli ports experienced a 4 per cent reduction in container movements between January and September 2009, compared with the same period in 2008.

According to the Israel Shippers’ Council (ISC), the country’s ports handled some 1.5m TEU in the first nine months of 2009, compared with 1.57m TEU in 2008.

Although the ports registered an increase of 12 per cent in containers exported during the third quarter, leading to an overall increase of 7 per cent during the quarter, total tonnage actually fell by 10 per cent.

For the full nine-month period, tonnage plummeted by 20 per cent compared with the year before, from 31.5m tonnes to some 25.3m tonnes, according to the ISC.
