The coordinator of government activities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza announced at the weekend that Israel would authorise an additional phase in an export project headed by the Dutch government to assist farmers in the Gaza Strip, according to news site Arutz Sheva.

Exports of cherry tomatoes will reportedly begin this week from the Gaza Strip, going to European markets via the Kerem Shalom border crossing, which is controlled by Israeli authorities.

The project, dubbed the Dutch Government Project, also includes exports of some 367 tonnes of strawberries from the Gaza Strip, approximately 5.3m carnations and 6 tonnes of peppers.

Residents in Gaza continue to face grave shortages in supplies of basic commodities since Israel introduced its blockade in June 2007, with the United Nations warning repeatedly of a humanitarian crisis.
