The UK's second-largest food retailer Asda has renamed International Produce (IPL), its direct sourcing division, in a move that reflects its growing business outside of fruit and vegetables.

The Walmart-owned company will now be known as International Procurement and Logistics Ltd, papers filed at Companies House show.

An Asda spokeswoman said the move “reflects its wider remit above and beyond just produce”.

While around 85 per cent of IPL’s business is still fresh produce, the company is now sourcing more wine, nuts, houseplants and flowers, as well as other globally traded commodities.

IPL was established in 2004 and was subsequently bought out by Asda in October 2009 as part of its direct sourcing drive.
