New York-based distributor S Katzman Produce took delivery of its first consignment of pomegranate seeds from India last week, reportedly selling out in regional retailers within a day.
The importer plans to expand off-season sales across the US after teaming up with a producer near Hyderabad.
“Pomegranate consumption has exploded as the public has found out about the health benefits,” said Dorn Wenninger, vice-president of Katzman’s international division.
The USDA will not allow whole fruit imports from India due to the supposed risk of pests.
