Independent grocery chains in France have seen their market share rise by 0.5 per cent in the last year, according to Kantar World Panel's 15th Référenseigne study, with Carrefour's supermarket format also recording an increase, of 0.4 per cent.
Système U has reportedly seen a 0.3 per cent progression, while Carrefour, Géant and Casino have lost ground (by 0.3 per cent), Végétable reported.
Auchan and Lidl remain stable with 8.6 and 4.8 per cent market shares respectively, while other hard discounters have fallen slightly.
Leclerc remains top, with a 17.1 per cent market share, followed by Carrefour (12.8 per cent), Intermarché (12 per cent) and Système U (9.1 per cent).
Taking into account the different retail formats, Carrefour Group, including its Carrefour Market fascia (8.5 per cent), retains its place as the comfortable market leader, with a 23.8 per cent share.
Although the Référenseigne study serves as a good general reference on the state of the retail sector, it should be noted that it omits fresh produce from its research.
