Under the name Worldwide Responsibility, leading returnable plastic crate (RPC) and pallet specialist IFCO launched a new initiative at Fruit Logistica 2010 last week, a move which will see the establishment of 'panels' known as IFCO Food Banks that will support the distrbiution of donated food.
In Germany alone, more than 40,000 volunteers hand out food donations to more than a million needy people via around 2,000 distribution points throughout the country.
The food, which comes primarily from retailers, must be collected, packed and sorted safely according to quality criteria before being transported onwards.
For that reason, IFCO is applying its expertise in the field of reusable packaging, shipping and logistics, offering green, environmentally friendly reusable containers and co-financing delivery vehicles.
With the symbolic presentation of a single 'green box to Sabine Werth, president of charitable organisation Berliner Tafel, Karl Pohler, CEO of IFCO, officially handed over 3,500 of the company's multi-use containers for use by group.
