Majid Al Futtaim has announced that it is suspending Carrefour Jordan and rolling out new brand Hypermax at its 34 stores across the country
Carrefour’s franchisee in the Middle East region, Majid Al Futtaim, has announced that it is replacing its Carrefour stores in Jordan with new brand Hypermax, with Carrefour Jordan stating on Facebook that it would no longer be operating in the country.
“We thank our customers and apologise for any inconvenience that may result from this decision,” Carrefour Jordan stated in a brief post on the website.
According to Reuters, Majid Al Futtaim said in an emailed response that it “regularly reviews and assesses its businesses to ensure it remains agile in adapting to evolving market dynamics”.
The move has been widely linked to the Palestinian-led boycott, divestment, sanctions (BDS) movement, which has targeted Carrefour following the retailer’s launch in Israel in May 2023.
Hypermax, a “brand-new Arab grocery chain”, will be rolled out across all 34 of Majid Al Futtaim’s stores across the country, Reuters reported.
Majid Al Futtaim reassured customers that Hypermax would meet the needs of its customers in Jordan and their preference for locally sourced products.
