The first yellow Brazilian melons to be shipped to Europe this year have reportedly arrived a week earlier than they did last year, with Dutch importer Hispa.
The company took delivery of the consignment at the port of Rotterdam on Wednesday 22 August, with managing director Miguel Gonzalez expressing confidence in the quality of the product.
'The melon quality is fine with good brix, and that is a good thing because now, although the quality of Spanish yellow melons is still acceptable, it is rapidly deteriorating.'
Hispa sells and markets the melons exlcusively under the Mossero brand, expects to handle around four containers a week of the melons during the coming season.
The group will also import Galia, Cantaloupe, Charentais, Piel de Sapo and watermelons, with Galia and Cantaloupe due to arrive in the market from week 36.
'Demand is currently good and prices are satisfactory,' added Gonzalez.
