Canacado Hub harnesses big data to ‘upgrade’ avocado and fruit production
Haskelberg Nurseries and Yellow Brick AgTech have joined forces to develop a new data management tool to make avocado production more sustainable and profitable.
Canacado Hub enables independent growers and cooperatives to record and share reams of data from their orchards, including genetic, biotic, and abiotic statistics, and agronomic information such as crop input usage and irrigation statistics.
“By bringing the power of big data and advanced analytics to the world’s avocado growers, we hope to support cooperatives and growers to make better informed agronomic decisions and thus produce better fruit, more profitably and more sustainably,” said Udi Haskelberg, CEO of Haskelberg Nurseries. “The Canacado Hub embodies Haskelberg’s commitment to innovation and reflects our well-known reputation in the avocado industry.”
The partners claim it is the first tool for growers that can help identify the optimal combination of rootstocks and varieties for specific environments, optimise yields, and increase profitability.
“Our collaboration with Haskelberg Nurseries has created a powerful tool that not only enhances data collection and analysis but also fosters a collaborative environment for the global avocado community,” said Johnathan Kol-Bar, chairman of Yellow Brick Capital.
“Water usage, carbon, and soil health are all associated with sustainability concerns in avocado production. The Hub, and analysis of the data it will collect, will help growers and cooperatives improve resource-use efficiency, whether through more targeted use of crop inputs today, or selection of more water-efficient genetics for the future.”
The Canacado Hub will be available with several pricing options including a free version for smaller growers. It consolidates and manages orchard data in one secure, accessible location, allowing users to benchmark their performance and optimise resources. The platform permits the reporting of orchard performance through a simple interface, accessed from a cell phone or tablet as well as a desktop or laptop browser.
The first version of the hub – specific to avocado growers – will be launched at next month’s Fruit Attraction. The partners plan future versions for additional crops and products, providing the tools and insights growers need to optimize crop performance and drive growth.
