Carrier Transicold PrimeLINE

Shipping group Hamburg Süd has opted to upgrade its refrigerated fleet with 3,000 40ft high-cube integrated containers, all of which use Carrier Transicold's PrimeLINE refrigeration unit, in a bid to improve its energy efficiency.

The move follows a series of operational trials and extensive laboratory analysis, according to Carrier Transicold, during which the German group sought to qualify refrigeration units with the lowest cost of ownership.

Conducted by Cambridge Refrigeration Technology in Cambridge, England, the tests were carried out on all refrigeration units and energy-saving software solutions on the market, with PrimeLINE demonstrating a 'superior energy efficiency'.

'With the increase in fuel prices over much of the last two years, the industry changed a lot,' said Martin Schoeler, deputy director of logistics technology at Hamburg Süd. 'Carrier's PrimeLINE unit proved to be a superior model when it comes to efficiency compared to other manufacturers.'

While Hamburg Süd is one of the top five reefer container carriers in the world, its refrigerated service comprises a larger part of its business than any other container line, with 15 per cent of its containers refrigerated.

The PrimeLINE unit was designed specifically to improve energy efficiency while also reducing environmental impact and lifecycle costs for refrigerated containers, with the unit's reduced power requirements also helping shipping lines to conserve fuel, thereby reducing emissions.

'When compared to the industry average, these 3,000 PrimeLINE units are expected to save enough energy over their life of operation to avoid approximately 70,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to removing more than 1,000 cars from the road over the same period,' said John Mandyck, Carrier's vice-president for sustainability and environmental strategies. 'PrimeLINE is another example of Carrier's two-decade leadership with sustainable products and operations.'
