German shipping group Hamburg Süd has announced that it has placed an order for 12 additional installations of maritime support system specialist Eniram's Dynamic Trimming Assistant (DTA), in a bid to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Hamburg Süd was the first container line to install the DTA system, which helps vessel crew optimise time for greatest efficiency and therefore lower fuel consumption and emissions, with the group seeing 'significant reductions' in bunker consumption of vessels equipped with DTA since late 2008.
The technology will be deployed on all of Hamburg Süd's post-Panamax container vessels by the end of the third quarter of 2011, with over 50,000 tons of CO2 every year expected to be saved across the fleet.
'Over the past 12 months, we have consistently seen significant fuel savings on all vessels on which we have installed DTA,' said Fred Deichmann, managing director of Columbus Ship management, Hamburg Süd's vessel management division. 'As we have sistervessels sailing on the same routes, it is possible to see the reductionin bunker consumption that dynamic trimming has made on those vessels equipped with the Eniram system.
'We see this system as a 'must-have' on any new vessels entering our fleet to ensure that they are as efficient and environmentally friendly as possible,' he added. 'As a result, all of the new 7,100 TEU vessels, the biggest in our fleet, will be fitted with DTA asthey enter service.'
