Haifa port

Major Israeli port Haifa last week announced improved results for the first quarter of the year, according to Port2Port.

The port handled 5.25m tonnes of cargo, an increase of 15 per cent compared with the year-earlier period.

The port's container sector recorded an increase of 14 per cent, from 261,880 TEU in the first quarter of 2009 to 297,319 TEU in the first quarter of 2010.

Container import volumes rose by 18 per cent to 148,000 TEU, while exports increased by 9 per cent to 149,000 TEU.

Haifa port's CEO, Mendi Zaltzman, added that the soon-to-be-installed TOS system, combined with the new gantry cranes due to be installed at the new Carmel terminal, will enable the port to keep providing its high level of service.
