HEB Texan retailer

H-E-B Grocery Company is pumping US$100m into the overhaul of several of its Austin, Texas-based outlets, according to a report by the Austin American-Statesman.

The investment is the retailer’s largest-ever spend in the area and will create 1,000 jobs, H-E-B president and COO Craig Boyan told the publication.

“Our business continues to be strong, and so this year, we’re making some huge investments in Texas,” Boyan said.

Under the plan, H-E-B will expand, remodel and relocate a number of stores including:

• Closing a location at 13776 N. U.S. 183 and replacing it with a 117,000ft2 H-E-B Plus store near Austin’s Lakeline Mall late this year or in early 2013;

• Expanding a store at in Cedar Park by 26,000ft2;

• Constructing a new, 75,000ft2 H-E-B later this year in the Mueller development.

The supermarket chain is also in the process of or soon to start remodelling a number of other stores, the American-Statesman reported.

H-E-B also recently completed a US$7m remodelling project at its store at North Lamar Boulevard and Rundberg Lane, adding 6,000ft2 which created around 40 jobs.

Meanwhile, Boyan said the company continues to cut prices across thousands of items and has launched a new campaign, “Compare our Prices to Anyone,” in its effort to help shoppers affected by the weak economy.

The grocer is also launching a campaign this year aimed at encouraging customers to eat more plant-based foods.

H-E-B remains the leading grocery chain in central Texas, with over 30 outlets in the region. The firm operates 335 markets in Texas and Mexico.
