Melons

Melons from Guadeloupe have earned Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status throughout the European Union, according to the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO), the Courrier Picard has reported.

Only fruit grown in Grande-Terre, in the eastern part of Guadeloupe, and on the island of Marie-Galante, can claim this distinction, which protects the name of the product in Europe.

Melons from Guadeloupe are harvested by hand from November to June. Growers in the country produce around 8,000 tonnes on an area of 500ha, according to the INAO.
