Swedish group’s new Greenhouse distribution centre in Helsinborg boasts one of largest solar arrays in the country
Swedish fresh produce company Greenfood Group says a giant array of solar panels on the roof of its new facility in Helsinborg will provide it with approximately 3.5mn kWh of electricity per year.
One of the largest ever constructed in Sweden, the energy system is now fully operational thanks to the work of contractors Öresundskraft and Soltech, who oversaw its installation.
The 17,800m2 facility itself is known as the Greenfood Greenhouse. And according to Ted Stenshed, CEO of Greenfood Fresh Produce, it was designed with modern technology and sustainability in mind from the very start.
“Solar panels are perfect for our operations, since our need to cool goods is greatest in the summer,” says Stenshed. “This means we can utilise solar energy optimally, reduce our electricity costs, and at the same time contribute to a more sustainable food production.”
The energy system certainly puts it at the forefront of energy and environmental efficiency.
The plant’s production is reckoned to be equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 700 average houses or 1,750 apartments.
According to Greenfood, it will cover approximately 20 per cent of the facility’s electricity needs and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 150 tonnes of CO2e per year.
