PGI red oranges Sicily

The volume of PGI-certified, red-fleshed oranges exported by the Italian island region of Sicily doubled during 2010, according to new information published by the Sicily Red Orange PGI Consortium.

The increase was confirmed by export association Fruitimprese, which released figures showing that Italy exported a total of 227,812 tonnes of citrus during the third quarter of last year – a 110.9 per cent increase compared with the previous year.

In value terms during the same three-month period to September, citrus exports were 79.9 per cent higher year-on-year at 143,700 tonnes.

According to a spokesperson for the PGI Consortium, the group is satisfied with what it describes as a 'growing appreciation' towards PGI red Sicilian oranges in a number of foreign markets.

The group plans to maintain and even improve on this positive trend during 2011.
