The Port of Antwerp has announced that it handled 48.17m tonnes of freight through the opening three months of 2014, up 2.5 per cent on the January-March period last year.
According to the port's marketing authority, container freight performed well, will ro/ro and liquid bulk also turning out good growth figures.
Indeed, container volume rose by 2.1 per cent year-on-year, up to 26m tonnes, corresponding to 2.15m TEU (up 0.9 per cent).
Some 3,443 seagoing ships called at the port through the three-month period, down 4 per cent on last year, although the gross tonnage of these vessels was actually up 0.7 per cent.
