China fuji apples

In Spain, Girona Fruits has revealed that it is investing €5m over the next two years to expand its apple storage and sales capacity.

The 30-member co-operative hopes to increase capacity by 5,000 tonnes. The first phase of development will see the installation of 16 small chambers to store apples in controlled atmosphere conditions and prolong shelf life naturally. This will enable the supply of each variety year round with identical quality and condition for Girona Fruits' customers.

Girona Fruits produces some 30,000 tonnes of Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Gala and Fuji apples as well as some pears. With the increased storage capacity in small chambers the co-op will be to service its customers in Spain and 30 export markets with fruit in optimum conditions when it is required.
